These photographs include Joseph Woodwell Co., the Woodwell and Herron families. The majority are photographs of the store showing changes, additions to interior and exterior of store as well as mojor events that effected the company. Descendants of Joseph Woodwell are photographed especially his son John and grandson William E. Woodwell. The Herron photographs have ancestors and friends with concentration on John W. and Jane Herron.

Joseph Woodwell Company began in 1847 as a small hardware store. Over the years it expanded as it rebuilt and added other departments. It was one of the first hardware and industrial supply houses in Pittsburgh. When Joseph died, his sons continued in the company.
